OHSAS 18001 Getting Started

OHSAS 18001 - Getting Started

For most organizations new to OHSAS 18001, resources and experience are limited. As a result, outside consulting services are used to support the development and implementation of their Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Management System.

Typically, the amount of time necessary to achieve OHSAS 18001 compliance will be based on the following:
  • the size of the organization;
  • the complexity of its operations;
  • the compliance obligations related to its activities; and
  • the scope of the proposed certification.

In contrast, preparation time will be inversely related to:
  • the knowledge level of personnel;
  • the degree of compliance that already exists within established systems; and
  • the resources made available to get the job done.

Of important note here is OHSAS 18001's strict emphasis on the fulfilment of compliance obligations. If your organization is not already in compliance with applicable Occupational Health & Safety regulations and requirements, certification is unlikely to be awarded until these issues are resolved.

Most organizations will require between 6 to 12 months for the development and implementation of an effective system; however some may take longer, some may take less.  These are general guidelines however, as it is really up to the organization, and their level of commitment to becoming OHSAS 18001 compliant.
